Looking at a new 2014 left over and my brother-in-law has had one for 6 months. He complains of the 14 being slow in the low end. I am riding a 2012 Ninja 1000 which has a high torque low end which I love. Is he right or just complaining in general. I haevn't ridden the 14 yet and want to hear opinions on the low end around town if possible.

Thanks,
Mike

I kind of have trouble thinking of a 180+ hp bike as being "slow on the bottom end", but if it ain't fast enough for you, the fix is just a pipe and a flash away.

A stock zx14r has more jam on the bottom end then any ninja 1000. Not even a comparrisson.

Your bro in law is right.
The 14R is an absolute slug below 10,000 RPM. Then you have about 1,000 RPM left to try and go anywhere.
I've heard if you cover up the ram air ducts with tape it helps.

Maybe the stock 06-07 bikes were not as fast as they could be but that was not hard to solve. It's a drag racing motorcycle. It can't be slow on the bottom end or anywhere. Maybe your bro in law was expecting something that would wheelie right above idle. That won't happen but the Gen1 and most def the Gen2 has more power above 3.5 k rpm than most people know what to do with .

Slow on the low end is not a phrase I would use to describe a 14. Your brother-in-law is full of crap.

Could not agree more with that phrase being incorrect.
By chance is your brother in laws other bike a turbo supercharged nitrous 1000hp machine?

Ninja 1000s aren't slow but acceleration there's no where they outperform a 14R. By 3000 rpm, 14R is outputting more torque than Ninja 1000's peak! Consider there's 30+ mph top speed difference, the 14R is geared much higher thus having less mechanical advantage turning the rear tire. Even with much higher gearing, in any range of acceleration the Ninja 1000 will not outperform a 14R.

Get the 14R, if there's one thing I will guarantee you is it's truly a super bike.

"slow on the low end"...pish posh...a piped and flashed 14R will accelerate plenty enough to need either a fine touch on the throttle,or KTRC set to '1'.Even that won't stop her from kickin her heels up...just hang on!

Wow, don't know how I missed this conversation :)
If its still relevant... I would say that there is a lot of low end power... get and ECU flash and its TOTALLY aggressive beast starting at 2500 RPM if you yank on it hard.

however, too hard and it will be riding you :-D

Has your BIL opened her wide open in first at say,2500rpm?Nothin but wheely and pull after that.It probably won't loft as 'quickly' as a 1000...but...once it does...ya better watch yer azz.It will flip easily.
